Sandbanks Provincial Park
Renowned for its picturesque dunes and white sand beaches, Sandbanks Provincial Park is located on Lake Ontario 15 minutes by car south-west of Picton. Approximately 600,000 visitors come to Sandbanks annually to camp, hike or go to the beach. The most popular beaches are Outlet Beach (endless white sand with shallow water going out for a distance) and Dunes Beach (giant sand dunes, bay beach with gentle waters and playground).
There are only three vacation homes for rent directly inside the park. One of these is Lakeview Farm House. Outside the gates of the park, enjoy a round of mini-golf at Caddyshack with Slicker’s ice cream for the kids and a licensed patio for the rest. Across the street, the Outerbanks Deli features yummy local fare and all kinds of beach-going accessories, not to mention Espresso!
There are two main ways to get to the park; via East Lake or via West Lake.
East Lake
Travel down County Road 10 south of Picton past scenic farmland and the occasional farm stand. Turn right on County Road 11 and follow it to the junction of County Road 18. Continue straight at the 4 way stop into entrance to the park. You might decide to stop for ice cream at Sunflower Fields on County Road 10 or for the art and peacefulness of Koi pond at the Mad Dog Gallery on County Road 11.
West Lake
The other main way to drive to the park is down County Road 12 south of Bloomfield. With an assortment of cottages and heritage homes, you have the option of stopping for lunch along the way or wait to enjoy burgers, hotdogs, poutine, and shakes at the concession stand at the beach. Make a stop at MacCool’s Reuse for mid-century modern finds and antiques. Your kids may want to spend a day or three at West Lake Wakeboarding or West Lake Willy’s Waterpark on Winn’s Drive.
